At Sutton C of E Primary School, Religious Education is a valued and inspiring part of our curriculum, helping every child to flourish as thoughtful, curious and respectful individuals. Rooted in our Christian vision, RE enables pupils to develop a deep understanding of Christianity while also exploring the rich diversity of religious and non-religious worldviews in the world around them.
Our curriculum is built around the Understanding Christianity resource and follows a carefully planned spiral approach, allowing children to revisit and deepen their understanding of key Christian concepts such as Creation, Incarnation, Gospel, Salvation and the Kingdom of God as they move through the school. The Big Frieze is used to help pupils make meaningful connections across the biblical narrative and understand how Christian beliefs are shaped by scripture. Our curriculum reflects the expectations of the Church of England's Religious Education Statement of Entitlement (2026), ensuring that Christianity remains at the heart of RE whilst providing opportunities to engage meaningfully with a range of religious and non-religious worldviews.
Alongside the study of Christianity, we have worked closely with the Diocese of Ely to develop high-quality units exploring a range of world faiths and worldviews, fully aligned with the Cambridgeshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. Through these units, pupils learn about the beliefs, practices and lived experiences of people from different traditions, helping them to develop respect, empathy and an appreciation of diversity.
Children are encouraged to think deeply through enquiry-based learning, big questions and purposeful discussion. RE lessons provide a safe and supportive environment where pupils can explore ideas, reflect on their own beliefs and values, and learn how to engage respectfully with the views of others. We aim to develop religious literacy so that children can confidently understand and discuss the role that faith and belief play in people's lives and communities.
Learning is further enriched through practical experiences, visits, visitors and special events throughout the year. Opportunities such as our Easter Stations of the Cross, Festivals of Light celebrations, church links and community events enable pupils to see faith in action and understand its significance in everyday life.
At Sutton, we want every child to leave primary school with a secure understanding of Christianity, a knowledge of a range of worldviews, and the confidence to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with the diverse society in which they live. Through high-quality RE, we nurture children who are reflective, compassionate and equipped to contribute positively to the wider world.
